Lo-cal Musak
A couple of weaker shows recently...
Thursday night, I went to a venue called "The Funhouse". Small bar - maybe maximum space of 100 people. They have a small bar, a pool table, a Star Wars Episode 1 pinball, 7-8 four-person booths, and an outside.
The band I came to see, opened - Rum Runner from Calgary. I hadn't heard them before, but reports were good. The show started about 10pm, with maybe 25 people in the bar (10 people in front of the stage). I was crashed out in a booth - long day at work...sorry guys.
They had good guitar work, but I couldn't hear any of the lyrics - the only songs I did hear lyrics for were a couple of covers...Do or Die (which I'd heard by Dropkick Murphys) and Streams of Whiskey (a popular cover of Pogues). I bought a CD (yeah you, I gave you $20 for it...I tip my bartenders, why not the musicians).
Their CD is solid - good stuff. (It's called Association.) If I could have heard the vocals during the show, it would have been a much better show. I'll still see them next time in town, and hope for better speakers.
I went a little overboard at work on Friday, staying too late. I was planning on hitting Bumbershoot for 1 of 2 shows starting around 9:30. It turned out the band I had hoped to see started at 9:15 not 9:45. Presidents of the USA started at 9:30 - I didn't see either...it was still $25 to get in, and that's too much for just one show.
I almost went home, and then found a flyer that Six Foot Savage was playing downtown Seattle. A long story short, I skipped out on the first two openers, paid a second cover at the Owl & Thistle, listened to the house band for a bit, came back to Savage. I used to like SFS a bit, especially during the Mystery Circus days, but...I couldn't like the first 3 new songs they played, so I called it a night.
